In the nebulous world of music reissues, it can seem an insurmountable challenge to stand out from the crowd and compete with labels that specialise exclusively in original releases. However, since 2013, one Amsterdam-based label has stolen a march on its counterparts when it comes to reissuing old school electronic music. It is called Music From Memory, and at its head are a pair of die-hard diggers and talent spotters named Jamie Tiller and Tako Reyenga.

The concept is simple: to give obscure and, at times, completely forgotten tracks a new lease of life. Having been rescued from the vaults, artists like Gigi Masin, Michal Turtle (whose Phantoms of Dreamland was without question one of the hottest reissues of 2016), Suso Sáiz and the immense Roberto Musci have found a second wind thanks to a new generation of fans of 80s ambient, insular electronica and synth pop. Jamie and Tako rarely miss a beat – the latter is also the founder of Amsterdam’s mythical Red Light Records store –, and they each display an uncanny knack for tracing out similarities between older music and the latest sounds. For them, it is all about rediscovery, memory, poetry and the exploration of long lost sonic territories. Their back-to-back at Nuits Sonores, as part of the Carte Blanche Amsterdam programme, will be another opportunity to dive back in to their immense vinyl collections. Get ready to go back to the future.
