Bio
Don’t be fooled: in spite of appearances, Gracy Hopkins is not the latest big thing in US hip hop. He may well, however, be France’s answer to the very best of what is currently being produced on the other side of the Atlantic. Armed with a thick trap sound, a gravelly voice and a demented flow, Gracy Hopkins is like a UFO hovering above the French rap landscape. The devilishly talented young Parisian is already considered to be one of his country’s most skilful vocalists.
Take some soul and jazz influences, add a choice selection of efficient beats, and flavour with inspiration drawn from the artist’s Angolan and Brazilian origins (above all on the excellent The Canção: Family). Does that whet your appetite? The result is a simple, powerful and devastating sound, projected against cinematic backgrounds that exude anguish and melancholia. With a video for Nyctophobia: Quiproquo that doffs its cap to La Haine by Matthieu Kassovitz, Gracy Hopkins is as far from the gloss and sheen of MTV as you can imagine. His performance will be one of the highlights of the first night of Nuits Sonores 2018.
