Turning your back on sunny Melbourne to go and live in the world’s northern-most capital may seem like a counter-intuitive decision. But perhaps it makes more sense when your name is Ben Frost. A reborn Viking of electronic noise experimentation and compression, Ben came to public attention as Brian Eno’s protégé for the Rolex Arts Initiative 2010. He is also the co-founder of record label Bedroom Community, a composer of film, opera and TV series soundtracks, and a serial collaborator (his sparring partners have included artist Tim Hecker, Polish orchestra Sinfonietta Cracovia and the Icelandic Dance Company). As diligent as he is dynamic, the year 2017 can only be described as a prolific one for the Australian: he authored an installation on the theme of the refugee crisis with Richard Mosse, composed the music for stage play The Wasp Factory, film Super Dark Times and Netflix series Dark, and released the soundtrack to TV series Fortitude. Somehow he still found time to put out The Centre Cannot Hold, his fifth and latest album to date, a condensed monument of telluric noise and volatile ambient harmonies. He may be icy by name, but this is one artist who is very definitely on a hot streak.
