Repetitive, extremist, experimental and yet refreshingly accessible, Aisha Devi makes the sort of music that hits you like a sucker-punch to the stomach. The founder of the (excellent) Dance Noire imprint, she released her album Of Matter And Spirit on Houndstooth, Fabric’s label, in 2015. Two years later, she took part in Noise Manifesto’s Decon/Recon #2 project with SØS Gunver Ryberg, Rrose and Paula Temple. Comprising four separate pieces composed by four different artists, exclusively using sounds provided by their fellow participants, the exercise aimed to showcase the value of artistic affinity over individual egos.
Punctuated by bass explosions and a capella flourishes, Aisha Devi’s live sets are as unsettling as they are fascinating: a sixty-minute glimpse into the future of music.
