Il Est Vilaine are a duo from Paris that sound like the prodigal lovechild of The Hacker and Canadian rock band Suuns. Armed with keyboards, a guitar and vocals as cavernous and reverberating as the Lascaux Cave, the pairing deliver music in the purest traditions of Kill The DJ and its sister label Lumière Noire, which has released two of their records. Blending compressed techno, anxious new wave and Italo-disco, Il Est Vilaine are content to remain on the periphery of the French electronic scene, drifting along in a parallel cosmos where James Dean can be found racing the motorbike from Akira (a persistent visual inspiration for the duo), to the soundtrack of the unrelenting, gushing rhythms of a kick drum machine and punctuated by spasmodic bass flourishes.
