The name Raymonde is never far from conversations about the French underground. The founder of cassette label Mus Joutra, Thibaut de Raymond – to give him his full title – is an eclectic music enthusiast with interests ranging from voodoo polyrhythms to African percussion and hip-hop experimentalism. Created principally from cassettes and tapes, his complex and mystifying live set can best be described as part-dark ambient, part-tropical aesthetics. Raymonde manages to negotiate this bewildering mix of styles and influences with panache, and nowhere is his talent more plainly on show than with J’aime bien le tonnerre, an EP that includes Rester Près du Bord, a stunning track that conceals a surprise around every corner.
