DJ Okapi, a familiar name for all fans of South African music, is an artist of many guises: legend on the Johannesburg digging scene, indefatigable creative force behind the Afro-Synth blog (and, more recently, record shop), close affiliate of Rush Hour records, and the world’s biggest fan of bubblegum and kwaito. But what stands out most with DJ Okapi is the passion that he exudes for rare South African vinyl. Whether it be disco, funk, reggae or afrobeat, it all has a place in his heart and in his DJ sets. From the Cape of Good Hope to the clubs and festivals of Europe, DJ Okapi has a knack for uniting music-lovers under the universal banners of sunshine and joie de vivre.
Following the huge success of Boogie Breakdown (South African Synth-Disco 1980-1984), his landmark curation for the American label Cultures Of Soul, DJ Okapi will make his debut at Nuits Sonores at the 2018 edition. See you at the front!
