Bio

Here is what we had to say about DAF ahead of their last visit to Lyon, for Nuits Sonores 2004: “Created in 1978, Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft is formed of Robert Görl (music, drums and electronics) and Gabi Delgado-Lopez (lyrics and vocals). DAF is a resolutely electronic, guitar-free punk group. Between 1978 and 1982, the duo – produced by some-time CAN and Kraftwerk collaborator Conny Plank – recorded five albums, establishing themselves at the forefront of German new wave. With their protest lyrics and invigorating, repetitive rhythms, their music embodies the sensuality, desire and pleasure of provocation. Released in 2003, the album Fünfzehn neue D.A.F.-Lieder (‘Fifiteen New DAF Songs’) explores a variety of themes, ranging from opposition to American politics to obsessive voyeurism.

We couldn’t have put it better today. Fast-forward to the end of 2017, and the Das Ist DAF box set is released: fully 6kg of re-issued vinyl and CDs compiled by the Grönland label, it has already sold out. As the duo’s live appearances become increasingly rare, hearing their classic hits Der Mussolini and Als wär’s das letzte Mal ringing out at Le Sucre is set to be one of the guaranteed highlights of Nuits Sonores 2018.
